Jewish (Žydų) Street, like many others, was part of the Jewish Quarter. It was next to the Great Synagogue and Stiklių (Glassmakers’) Street. The street was an active part of the Quarter with shopping area, religious Jew gatherings, and children playing next to the houses.
This street had an important feature — the belief that Vilna Gaon (1720 – 1797) lived here. He was one of the last great scholars of the Talmud, or HaGra — HaGaon Rabbenu Eliyahu (the holy teacher Elijah, or Elijah ben Solomon Zalman). With his intelligence and knowledge, he made the Grand Duchy of Lithuania well-known around the world. When Gaon was only 9-years old, he learnt the Old Law by heart, and at the age of 10, almost the entire Talmud. In the house where he lived, there is now a monument.
