The suggested route takes you past iconic landmarks of Vilnius and touches on their historic background. Stunning views are included on the itinerary as some of the sights are located at the highest points of the city.

Make sure to wear your comfy shoes and bring a camera, because you’re going to want to capture the beauty of Vilnius on the walk.

Gediminas Tower

Start your sightseeing with your heart rate pumping and head up to Gediminas’ Castle Tower which is often crowned the most popular attraction in Vilnius. As the legend goes, Gediminas, the Duke of Lithuania, had a prophetic dream after which he decided to build a castle. And that’s what he did.

After numerous wars throughout history, the tower is the only remaining part of the castle. The famous red-brick construction invites you inside to an indoor exhibition, followed by a chance to admire the panoramic view of the city from the observation deck.

University’s St. Johns’ Church Bell Tower

This time you won’t have to do the walking all the way to the top. The second landmark is St. Johns’ Tower and luckily it has a lift that takes you up there.

From its deck, you get a magnificent view overlooking the old town as the tower is the highest building in the historic part of Vilnius. Bear in mind that there’s a small entrance fee and the tower is only open seasonally, from April to August.

Literatai Street

The third stop on your route is more of an interesting way to reach St. Anne’s Church. Nonetheless, the enchanting tiny street is definitely worth stopping by.

In Lithuanian, it is called Literatų gatvė, and the street is decorated with art dedicated to prominent authors in Lithuanian literature. It’s not street art per se, but more like miniature masterpieces made from glass, metal, wood or ceramic installed on the side of the wall.

St. Anne’s Church

Perhaps you’ve heard the story that when Napoléon Bonaparte saw the grandeur of the Church of St. Anne’s wanted to take it with him. Even though that’s only a legend, the building remains a frequently visited architectural gem and not without reason. The church is one of the most prominent gothic buildings in the country that has withstood over 500 years, including wars and occupations.

Subačius Viewpoint

Tomorrow you can boast about how many calories you’ve burnt because to reach Subačius street you’ll have to walk for an additional kilometre along Maironis street and then up the hillside.

Once you reach the top of it, you’ll find a vantage point with some dazzling views of Vilnius. Check out then the engraved sculpted metal plate, so you can identify the buildings that can be seen from there.

The Gates of Dawn

And now, less than 10 minutes away is your final stop—the Gates of Dawn aka Aušros Vartai. The sight is well known historically, as it is the only remaining city gate dating back to the early 1500s, and religiously, as it is one of the most visited shrines in Vilnius.
